SONG WRITING TIPS

INSPIRATION:

Find inspiration from your own experiences, emotions, or things that interest you. Your feelings regarding a topic become more apparent when you write about a personal story vs someone elses.

Choose a Theme or Mood:

The overall theme or mood you want to convey in your music will help guide your writing and keep your thoughts linear and focused.

Start with with either the Lyrics or  Melody Music:

Everyone's mind works differently so in the end how you begin is up to you. But in the end, the words you have written along with the music you have created to carry it go hand in hand.

Experiment with Harmony and Chords: Harmony adds depth and richness to your music. Experiment with different chord progressions and harmonies to find ones that complement your melody and evoke the desired emotions.

Don't Be Afraid to Edit: Writing music is a process of trial and error. Don't be afraid to make changes to your composition as you go along. Listen to your instincts and be willing to revise and refine your music until it feels right.

Keep a tape recorder around to catch those spontaneous shower and driving tunes that are all too forgotten hours and even minutes later.  Additionally, keep a pencil and paper near your bed so you can jot down those amazing but fleeting thoughts and dreams.

Writing music is a gift.  It is a special thing no everyone can do.

Lots of people can sing but far fewer can write.

Don't complain when you hear a baby cry.

Who knows, you could be getting an impromptu concert

from the next Taylor Swift or Mariah Carey
